Meet The Artist!
Howen Chi is a Toronto‑based freelance illustrator and concept artist who specializes in cinematic character splash arts for narrative, game‑inspired worlds.
Born in Hong Kong and trained at OCAD University, he now channels the wonder of his childhood self into evocative, story‑driven visuals that live between fantasy and reality.
Inspired by video game arts, Howen builds scenes that feel like pivotal moments—characters caught mid‑beat, lit for drama, and anchored in worlds that connect to larger stories.

1. BRIEFING
This is the phase where the vision of the project gets defined—whether it starts as a detailed brief or a simple “what about this?”
Now is the time to discuss everything from the message, helpful ideas, storytelling, and deadlines!
3. REFINING
Here is what I call the linear phase, where we take the refined version of sketches and clean them up.
At this stage there may be revisions as sometimes things just don’t work.
This phase will essentially be the bulk of the feedback loop between me and the client.

4. FINALIZE
Pushing towards the finish line, we take the refined version and fully flesh it out for final appearances.
Once the project is fully completed, it is ready to be delivered to the client!
Formats that are provided are TIFF, PDF, PSD, PNG, JPEG.

2. IDEATION
In this phase, the vision starts taking shape in the form of early ideation sketches that should capture the general visual idea.
The end of this phase is also what I would call the ‘greenlight’ phase, where things are ready to move into development!
